Hi all

I have quite a bit of BSAP regalia. Given that I was ZRP not BSAP, I feel that perhaps some of the stuff I have could do better in someone else's collection...

I have a BSAP plaque - currently above my desk, a BSAP cap badge, collar dogs, shoulder flashes, a set of unused tunic buttons and numerous PR and DUB slip ons - including Field Reserve, S/O and stick leader.

I am always looking for Rhodesiana and also ZRP regalia - P/O shoulder bars would be really neat!

Will supply photos if needed...

Would consider any viable swap if anyone is interested.

Best regards

Hi all - I'm new to this forum and look forward to particpating in it...

Recently, a friend in South Africa contacted me as he had fallen over a collector of BSAP/ZRP regalia. He knew that I was looking for the ZRP anodised shoulder flashes and collar dogs.

I was also looking for 4 of the Patrol Officer bars as I was a senior P/O with two bars on each shoulder.

I was a little surprised when he told me that his collector would sell the four to me at R75 each as they were "BSAP"! To the best of my knowledge (and I have two bars as reference), there is absolutely no difference between the BSAP and ZRP bars and therefore, the claim that the price should be increased is quite unsubstantiated.

I have two bars as I say, and intend to build two more using putty - these will appear on a box frame that I am designing for display.

Thanks for this wonderful form.

Best regards

I was asked to submit some info on the origins of the Oliphant which is used in the design of the Intaf badge. It makes the badge somewhat unique in its design. However it does follow the tradition of using a powder horn to indicate a light (minimal equipment and weapons) fast moving regiment and Intaf did just this!
DC Alex Bundock designed the Intaf badge. He said "The Oliphant was made from an elephant tusk and preceded the curved bugle of the 1700s, adopted by some foot and rifle Regiments as their badge (check the RLI badge). As we were suddenly thrust into the role of virtual foot soldiers I thought it appropriate and no other unit I knew of used the Oliphant in badge form."
The powder horn is traditionally used by Rifle Regiments and Light Infantry and has been since the 1800s. The more modern powder horn is commonly found in many British and colonial regiments and is still used by the Rifles to this day. As an example the Malawi Rifles and the Durban Light Infantry still use the powder horn in their design as do some other regiments in Canada.
The Intaf Oliphant is a bit unusual in that it faces the opposite direction and while must have been accepted as correct by the Heraldry Dept of Rhodesia goes against general heraldic rules where the subject / image is supposed to face from right to left as you look towards it.

Whenever and wherever I see any reference to Guard Force personnel, especially on their Rolls of Honour, there do not seem to be any service numbers.

Does this mean that, like Intaf, and unless you specifically did your NS, the unit did not have service numbers. In Intaf, we had the normal civil service employment/payroll numbers, but only where you also did your NS then, like me, you ended up with a proper service number.

Can anyone shed some light on this, and does anyone perhaps have a Guard Force medal recipient's gong where the inscription on the rim may help to answer this one.

Also, Guard Force, and here also like Intaf, did not appear to have units under the main Guard Force command. For example, RLI had Commandos, Engineers had Squadrons, etc.

For that matter, I don't think Selous Scouts were divided into units either.
